Treatment Modalities

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of psychological treatment that has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and phobias. This therapy involves using rapid eye movements or other bilateral stimulation (such as tapping or buzzing) to help the brain process and integrate traumatic or disturbing memories.
One of the key benefits of EMDR therapy is that it can help to reduce or eliminate the negative symptoms associated with trauma, such as flashbacks, anxiety, and avoidance behavior. This can allow individuals to move forward in their lives and cope with difficult experiences in a healthier way.Another benefit of EMDR therapy is that it can help to improve cognitive functioning and emotional regulation. This can lead to better decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional well-being.
EMDR therapy is also considered to be a relatively short-term treatment, with many individuals experiencing significant improvements in symptoms after just a few sessions. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may not have the time or resources to commit to long-term therapy.
In addition to its effectiveness in treating mental health issues, EMDR therapy is also non-invasive and relatively easy to learn. This makes it a viable option for individuals who may not be comfortable with more traditional forms of therapy.
Overall, EMDR therapy is a powerful tool for individuals looking to overcome the effects of trauma and improve their mental health.

Walk and Talk

Walk and talk therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves walking outdoors with a therapist while discussing issues and problem-solving. It's also known as outdoor therapy or hiking therapy.

Walk and talk therapy can be a good fit for people who:

  • Enjoy spending time outdoors

  • Have extra energy during therapy sessions

  • Don't feel comfortable sitting still

  • Prefer to talk side by side instead of face to face

  • Feel more at ease in nature

Some benefits of walk and talk therapy include:

  • Physical activity

Walk and talk therapy promotes physical activity and reduces sedentary behavior, which can be linked to mental health problems.

  • Fresh air

Walk and talk therapy takes place in nature, which can help relieve pressure and improve the ability to share.

  • Nature-based metaphors

Walk and talk therapy can incorporate natural grounding tools or nature-based metaphors.

Walk and talk therapy sessions can take place in a variety of outdoor settings, such as parks, trails, along the coast, in hills or forests, or in city environments.

Somatic

Somatic therapy combines mindfulness, talk therapy, and what can be considered alternative forms of physical therapy. The therapist helps you focus on your body or revive memories of traumatic experiences and pays attention to any physical responses you have once the emotion is experienced or the memory is recovered.

Treatment techniques include deep breathing, relaxation exercises, and meditation, each used to help relieve symptoms. Some of the adjunctive physical techniques that may be used with somatic therapy include dance, exercise, yoga, vocal work, and “bodywork” akin to massage or physical therapy. Treatment techniques can be used in individual or in group therapy settings.

You may have strong emotional and physical sensations arise during somatic therapy as a result of working through memories of experiences that were painful for you.

How It Works

Somatic therapy emphasizes helping patients develop resources within themselves in order to self-regulate their emotions, or to move out of the fight/flight/freeze response and into a higher-functioning mode where they can think more clearly. Through developing awareness of the mind-body connection and using specific interventions, somatic therapy helps to release the tension, anger, frustration, and other emotions that remain in a patient’s body from these past negative experiences. The goal is to help free the patient from what is preventing them from fully engaging in their lives.

Physical awareness is a key part of somatic therapy. A therapist might help the patient get into a mindful state by asking them to notice certain things: If they are upset, what is it in their body that tells them they are upset? Is it a tightening in the stomach? Or a dark feeling in the chest? Then the therapist asks the client to focus on those sensations, and by observing the client’s gestures and postures, find out what movement the client would have liked to have made, but couldn’t.

Centering is a foundational practice in somatic therapy in which a patient develops a calm home base in the body. It is achieved through building awareness of one’s muscles, breath, and mood. By slowing down one’s breathing, patients are able to “feel” more of what’s going on around and inside them.

FAQs

  • Once you take the first step to reach out, we will set up a consultation phone call. This will be 15 minutes for you to tell me a little about yourself in order to see if we are a good fit. If we both feel good, I will send you all the paperwork through the client portal, and we will get you scheduled for your first session.

During your first session, we will work together for me to get to know you and what your goals are for therapy. I will ask questions and guide the conversation, no worries. We will meet weekly as we start and can talk more about schedule during our time together. You never have to feel worried or stressed when coming to therapy. We will work together to be sure we are addressing all your concerns.

I will already have your card information and will charge you after the session is complete.
